Stay Refreshed: Hydration and Muscle Recovery
Hydration is one of the most straightforward aspects of recovery — and one of the most commonly overlooked. Whether you've just finished a training session or a remedial massage appointment, adequate fluid intake supports the body's normal physiological processes and may assist in how you feel in the hours that follow.
Why hydration matters for muscle recovery
Water is involved in a wide range of physiological processes relevant to muscle function and recovery. It plays a role in maintaining electrolyte balance and transporting nutrients to tissues.
Maintaining adequate hydration throughout the day — not just during or after exercise — supports the body's normal processes.
Hydration and massage therapy
Remedial massage works with the soft tissues of the body — muscles, fascia, and connective tissue. Well-hydrated tissue tends to be more pliable and responsive, which may support the effectiveness of treatment. Conversely, arriving at a massage appointment significantly dehydrated may affect tissue quality and your overall experience of the session.
Following a massage, it is generally advisable to drink water and maintain good fluid intake over the following hours. This supports the body's normal processes in the period after treatment.
Before your appointment
Aim to be well hydrated in the hours leading up to your session. Drinking water consistently throughout the day is more effective than consuming a large amount immediately before arriving. Avoid arriving significantly dehydrated, particularly if you have been exercising or it is a warm day.
After your appointment
Continue to maintain normal fluid intake after your session. If you have been exercising or it is a warm day, adjust your intake accordingly.
General daily habits
- Drink water consistently throughout the day rather than in large amounts at once
- Monitor urine colour as a simple indicator — pale yellow generally suggests adequate hydration
- Increase fluid intake during and after physical activity, particularly in warm weather
- Be mindful that caffeine and alcohol can contribute to fluid loss
What to expect after treatment
Some clients experience mild muscle soreness or fatigue in the 24–48 hours following a remedial massage session, particularly after a firm treatment or if it has been some time since their last session. Staying well hydrated, resting adequately, and avoiding strenuous activity immediately after treatment may assist in how you feel during this period.
